To love is to care for the happiness of the beloved and not one's own. Somehow, around this year's Valentine's day, watching Jodhaa Akbar reminded me of this saying. The Rs. 40 crore magnum opus will remain etched in my mind as one of the finest movies I have ever watched. Ashutosh Gowariker surely has a midas touch. His "Lagaan" was breathtakingily exciting and projected the glimpses of rural India under Raj very subtly and empathically. His next venture "Swades" , though a poor performer at the box office, was no less brilliant and portrayed the inner conflicts of an NRI in balancing his material ambitions with being an instrument in sharing the burden of the land of his birth, equally beautifully. Cast : Shahrukh Khan ,Vidya Malavade , Chitrashi Rawat , Sagarika Ghatge , Shilpa Shukla , Tanya Abrol
Director : Shimit Amin
Writer : Jaideep Sahni
Producer/Distributor : Yashraj Films
Chak De India' could not have been released at a better
time. With India's 60th Independence Day around the corner (when the
movie was released), it makes a well-timed entry into the movie halls.
It is an energetic movie awakening patriotism that often hibernates
amidst the hustle-bustle of daily life. As expected of Yash Raj Films, it is an excellent movie to
watch with kids especially for us NRIs who are always trying to instill
some pride and a soft corner for the country of our origin, to which we
owe our very existence and for shaping us the way we are.

Starring: Kunal Hemu, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neetu Chandra, Sudhir Mishra
Direction: Madhur Bhandarkar
Traffic Signal is all about the happenings at a busy traffic signal of the mega city Mumbai. The movie is a creation of the talented film director Madhur Bhandarkar who has in past made the much acclaimed movies such as Chandani Bar, Page 3 and Corporate. Traffic Signal is the third in his Mumbai trilogy after Page 3 and Corporate which depicted the lives of the wannabes and the glitterarti and the boardrrom manouevers respectively in the modern Mumbai society. Madhur had also made an award winning movie Chandni Bar which dealt with the lives of bar dancers. The director has definitely
carved a niche for himself in making movies which expose the murky underbelly of the metropolis.
The movie caught my attention also due to the fact that it stars Neetu Chandra who is a native of Patna and has earned a good name for herself in the field of modelling and now the Bollywood movies. Earlier she had acted in a multi starrer movie called Garam Masala. Bihar is not quite well known to produce film heroines and emergence of Neetu Chandra as a lead Hindi actress is a very welcome news.

Cast: Kal Penn, Tabu, Irfan Khan, Jacinda Barrett, Sahira Nair
Director: Mira Nair
Screenplay: Sooni Taraporevala, based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri
Mira Nairs cinematic interpretation of Jhumpa Lahiris novel Namesake portrays emotional journey of a first generation Bengali immigrant couple; the plot strikes a common chord with scores of people living in foreign shores who left their countries in quest of better opportunities.
The Namesakes plot shifts back and forth along large canvas spanning up to 25 years, kudos to Mira Nair for handling such large spread seamlessly. The narrative is interspersed with glimpses of Interpreter of Maladies (Jhumpa Lahiris short story collection), but revolves around life experiences of the protagonist Gogol (played by Kal Penn of Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle fame) and his family (mother Ashima Ganguly played by Tabu, father Ashok Ganguly played by Irfaan, and his sister Sonia played by Sahira Nair).
