Claudia Zechel Meeting Mrs. Claudia Zechel on Wednesday 6Dec06 was like meeting a younger avatar of Mother Teresa who I was very unfortunate to have missed seeing in flesh and blood though I lived in Kolkata for 6 years and that too at a place not very far away from her celebrated home for the poor named "Nirmal Hriday". It was indeed a soul-stirring experience to go through a lecture comprising of photo slides about Asha Vihar which Claudia and her wonderful team from Germany and elsewhere have been running near Bokaro in Jharkhand since 1995. When I received an invitation for this programme, I was not sure if the evening lecture would hold much to justify spending 2-3 hours on an arduous working day but within minutes I realised how wrong I would have been in underestimating the incredible work Asha Vihar, the institution which Claudia, her Orthopaedic husband and her team have built over the years. At the end of the presentation, I was left wondering how an individual could undertake such seemingly utopian tasks and achieve results which in my opinion are absolutely mind boggling.

Jharkhand Vikas Nyas (JVN)

This is a Ramgarh based charity organisation run by Mr Basant Hetamsaria. JVN is currently running a “Rag-pickers” project where they support destitute and orphaned children who would otherwise earn their livelihood through rag-picking.They run a school for these children

GENVP

Gramin and Nagar Vikas Parishad (GENVP) is a voluntary organization working for the upliftment of the socially dis-advantaged lot in Bihar. The target benificiaries of GENVP projects are women, children and the physically challenged.

The founders of GENVP observed that governmental programs were not reaching the intended beneficiaries. Thus, with the involvement of local rural people and other professionals’ educationists, social activists and farmers, Gramin Evam Nagar Vikas Parishad was born to try and address issues of rural development.

Mr. Ram Kishor Prasad Singh is the General Secretary of GENVP. He was actively involved in the famous JP Movement launched against corruption and protection of democracy in the state of Bihar.

Children of Mother Earth (COME) is a voluntary organisation which believes the world is one family. It aims to create a civic society in backward areas of developing countries. COME is endeavouring to do so by establishing a system of social networks through education, welfare and medical services.It was founded in 1998 by a Singaporean engineer Mr. Ravi Rai, who gave up his career to serve humanity. COME is now led by a team of professionals of which most of them have volunteered their services.
The focus of COME is Children, Education, Health, and Disaster Relief. It works in India, Singapore, Thailand.
