Chak De India' could not have been released at a better
time. With India's 60th Independence Day around the corner (when the
movie was released), it makes a well-timed entry into the movie halls.
It is an energetic movie awakening patriotism that often hibernates
amidst the hustle-bustle of daily life. As expected of Yash Raj Films, it is an excellent movie to
watch with kids especially for us NRIs who are always trying to instill
some pride and a soft corner for the country of our origin, to which we
owe our very existence and for shaping us the way we are.
The story is woven around a Hockey coach (played by Shahrukh
Khan)
who puts his heart and soul into training a ladies hockey team for the
World Cup.The coach was once a hockey captain who had been unfortunate
enough to miss a deciding goal against Pakistan, and had to endure a
lot
of animosity from the press and public thereafter. Through the
ladies hockey team he tries to get back the seal of honor and integrity
by
making them win the Women's Hockey World Cup. Under the direction of
Shimit Amin, Shahrukh does full justice to the character by fully
gripping the audience with his drive and spirit of winning. The team
wins and finally 'the coach' returns to his home village, a proud man.
The movie is indeed refreshing and holds the viewers attention
right from the start to the very end. Kids love each scene.....whether
it is the girls beating up the local 'majnus', or the goals shot by the
Indian team. It is a pleasant reminder of movies like 'Jo jeeta wahi sikandar' and 'Lagaan'.
With skepticism written all over their faces, the first reaction from most of the viewers prior to the show was, 'No
heroine?'. But an interesting and well-woven plot does not let one feel the need for any splashes of glamour.
I would highly recommend this movie to all who want to watch a
clean movie with their parents or kids. I think after 'Ta Ra Rum Pum',
the next movie for kids (who are kids by age and those who have the
'kid' in them) is definitely 'Chak De India'.
